What is Rallycross?

SCCA Rallycross is a solo driving competition that emphasizes car control on low grip surfaces. Production and production based vehicles are used to compete on whatever surface nature provides be it mud, grass, dirt, or gravel. Courses are intended to be free of hazards so that drivers may compete in their daily driven cars and have the freedom to make mistakes without worry of damage to the vehicles. Vehicles must pass a tech inspection before they will be allowed to take part in the event. Drivers run individually against the clock to complete the course in the shortest amount of time. Courses are different every time so that nobody has the advantage of having driven it before. The course is defined using orange traffic cones to form gates, walls, turns, slaloms, chicanes, and so forth. Each cone that is hit or moved results in a 2 second penalty. Because the focus of Rallycross is on driver skill, cars are classified by their capabilities according to the SCCA Performance Rally rules. This way you can compare your skills with others in similarly prepared vehicles. Typically during an event you will get at least 4 runs through a course. Usually one of the runs may be dropped and the remaining times are added up for a final score. The drivers with the lowest final score in their respective classes are the winners.
